| New Orleans jazz, which is also famously known as Dixieland music is a style of jazz began to form at the end of the nineteenth century in New Orleans and spread to Chicago and New York before the first World War by traveling bands from New Orleans. New Orleans, to many people is considered the home and birthplace of Jazz. New Orleans had a very multicultural immigrant population mainly from Africa and Europe and it is this melting pot of influences that helped create the New Orleans Jazz sound. The musicians of New Orleans blended brass band marches, ragtime, blues and French Quadrilles with a mesh of polyphonic improvisation from trumpet, trombone and clarinet. The rhythm section might consist of acoustic guitar, piano, ukulele or banjo, acoustic drums and upright bass or brass tuba.
"When the Saints Go Marching In" is a well known New Orleans Jazz standard and Louis Armstrong's band The All Stars is probably one of the most famous Dixieland Jazz bands. The popularity of New Orleans Jazz waned as Swing started to become popular in the nineteen thirties. There have been several revivals and mutations such as the late nineteen fifties Dixie-Bop which blends Dixieland Jazz with Bebop. Today there is still a traditional New Orleans Jazz movement and various festivals still promote the genre world wide such as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival or the Tarragona international dixieland festival. New Orleans Jazz has had a profound influence on twentieth century popular music, not
least Swing, Rhythm & Blues and nineteen fifties Rock & Roll. Some artists to perhaps look out for include Kenny Ball, Jim Callum Jazz Band,Bunk Johnson, The Happy Pals, and Louis Armstrong.
