Bolero os the name of more than one type of Latin music this includes dance and song. Generally, all Bolero styles have a slow or slowish. Popular now for over one hundred years the Spanish and Cuban forms have different origins. The Spanish style of Bolero dates back to the late 18th century where a blend of the two dances, the contradanza and the sevillana, were fused by the dancer Sebastiano Carezo. It is a dance for a soloist or a couple with a slowish tempo and is accompanied to music with vocals, guitars and castanets. The lyrics have five to seven syllables in every line of the four line verses. Always in triple time the second beat of each bar usually has a triplet.
The Cuban bolero comes, originally, from Santiago de Cuba in the later stages of the nineteenth century where a number of touring musicians, singers and guitarists developed the song and dance style by living close to the people and their songs reflected the loves, lives and concerns of the people. One such musician is Pepe Sanchez who is known as the grand daddy of the trova. The Cuban Bolero spread to other parts of South America where others, Puerto Rican music composer Rafael Hernández and the Mexican Agustín Lara continued to develop the style. Fusions followed such as the danzon, the bolero-son, the bolero-mambo, the bolero-cha.
