White Beetle Presents our Hip Hop category. This category contains pieces of music influenced directly or indirectly by the Hip Hop music genre and may use vocals or be solely instrumental.
Keith Cowboy, a rapper with Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five is said to have coined the phrase Hip Hop while teasing a friend who had just enlisted, by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" to simulate the sound of marching. Cowboy went on to use the phrase and rhythm live and the hip hop beat was born quickly being copied by others in the music scene and it also became a name for the subculture it represented. Hip hop music is both based around either live or produced music but a clearly defined four four drum beat is normally quite prominent. It can be instrumental and or with vocals and lifted samples from many other genres of music are often looped and incorporated to augment and enhance the sound. The golden age of Hip Hop is generally agreed to be the late nineteen eighties and early nineteen nineties and artists of note within this period are Public Enemy, KRS-One, Eric B. & Rakim, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Jungle Brothers.
