Bossa Nova

The soft characteristic sound of Bossa Nova initially developed from groups having to rehearse in peoples living rooms where playing loud was a problem and a soothing, gentle and syncopated sound evolved as a result. More complex harmonically and is less percussive than its closely related ancestor Samba Bossa Nova is also influenced by Jazz and in particular jazz styles such as cool jazz.

Early development began in the late nineteen fifties by João Gilberto,Vinícius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim (music). The ground breaking Getz/Gilberto recording "The Girl From Ipanema" helped define the Bossa Nova genre and was covered by countless artists all trying to cash in this new wave of laid back romantic music. An early influence of bossa nova was Henri Salvador's "Dans mon île" which was featured in the 1957 Italian film IEuropa di notte by Alessandro Blasettix. The 1959 film Black Orpheus brought huge popularity top Bossa Nova in Brazil and in Latin America then spreading to the USA by way of touring US musicians. Charlie Byrd and Stan Getz help popularize Bossa Nova in the United States of America as did Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.
