Comissioned Music FAQ

1. Why Commission a piece a music?

The disadvantage of using Royalty Free Music is it tends to be licensed on a non exclusive basis so there is a small chance you will hear the music elsewhere. The best option if you want your production to stand out from the crowd is to commission a composer, this way you get an exclusively licensed piece of music tailored to your production.

2. What is your "Proof of Concept"?

We offer a proof of concept which means that we write you a 10-20 second example to the criteria you have given us. This is free of charge and you do not have to commit if you do not wish to. This way you get a clear idea of what we will write for you and, of course, it gives you the chance to help us develop the commissioned piece at an early stage by improving your criteria/concept.

3. How long does a proof of concept take?

Unless we are very busy it usually takes about one working week but we can rush it through if you need it very quickly.

4. How much does it cost to commission a piece of music?

It really depends on how long you want the piece to be and what kind of production is required (i.e. a piano and acoustic guitar will be much cheaper than a string quartet and a choir). We are always happy to work within your budget as long as your expectations are realistic. The quotes we provide are usually very accurate.

5. Should You provide rough edits?

Yes. It is obviously better to work to picture. However if we are provided with a good list of directions and the script we can begin work at an earlier stage of your production without images.

6. Do you pay royalties on commissioned music?

No you do not and you have the exclusive license to that piece of music so no one else can use it. However, the composer will still collect royalties when your production is aired: these will be paid by the Broadcaster.
